E71 v N97 Tweeted Thoughts

9 07 2009

Just in case you don’t follow nokiAAddict on Twitter, I tweeted the following comments this morning  on my thoughts on the E71 v N97:-

E71 v N97 Keyboard: One handed use the E71 wins, but overall easy of use the N97 wins.

E71 v N97 Screen: Hell the N97 wins this hands down for the sheer size of the screen, I’ll miss it :(

E71 v N97 Sound: The N97 wins with the dual speakers and overall sound quality, plus the N97 has a 3.5mm audio connector.

E71 v N97 Battery: Snap they both have the same battery, but E71 tends to last longer, N97’s big screen must kill it?

E71 v N97 Phone Memory: E71 Wins, I have all my apps installed on th einternal memory and still have loads spare.

E71 v N97 Mass Memory: N97 wins with 32GB plus a seperate MicroSD slot for possibly additional 16GB

E71 v N97 Pre-Installed Apps: E71 wins here for me with FREE Full working Quickoffice, Adobe PDF & Advanced Call Manager.

E71 v N97 Apps: Mmm hard one to judge, they both run 3rd party apps great, some N97 ones have still to be updated i.e. Coreplayer.

E71 v N97 Web Browser: N97 Wins big on this one, the default nokia browser if way better than the E71 and a joy to use.

E71 v N97 Camera: N97 Wins with 5MP Camera and excellent video quality.

E71 v N97 GPS: Snap they both have GPS, but N97 edges ahead with the additional compass, looks sweet in Nokia Maps.

E71 Performance: The E71 is a rock solid performer, run as much apps as you want and the E71 can handle it.

N97 Performance: Will run apps beautifully, but run to many and it starts closing them in the background.

E71 v N97 Performance: E71 is the winner and whoever approved the Processor/RAM for the N97 should be sacked.

E71 v N97 Homescreen: N97 edges a little ahead of the E71, but we want more and even better widgets.

E71 v N97 Looks: Both are beautifully made phones, White is the new Black :D

E71 v N97 Video: The N97 wins, it just seems to play anything online you want. E71 struggles sometimes!

E71 v N97 Photos: N97 wins, viewing, handling and then sending using OVI Share are way better than E71.

E71 v N97 Overall: If they had beefed up the RAM & Internal Memory I would be SHOUTING N97, but…

How to reset your N97

6 07 2009

There has been a number of people having problems with their N97’s and having to totally reset the phone to fix different issues, so I’ve decided to put together this guide on the best way to go about the task and have the N97 back to full optimum usability.

Prepare for Reset
1. Phone contacts is the only thing I really backup, best way I use is to copy all contacts to mass memory for quick reinstall later:.

Within Contacts application:
a) Options \ Mark/Unmark \ Mark all
b) Options \ Copy business card \ To other memory
c) Select ‘E: Mass memory’ and ‘Yes’ to remove existing contacts from selected memory.

NOTE: You could use Backup in File Manager to copy Contacts, Calendar and Bookmarks to a memory card?

2. Other Application Data depends on what applications you have installed, have a look yourself and save on mass memory. I have Profimail & SplashID which I export the settings/data and save on Mass memory for importing later.

3. Goto Menu\Settings\Application mgr.\Installed apps. and uninstall all applications installed on the Mass Memory.

4. Hard Reset the phone my dialing *#7370# from the homescreen and entering Lock Code 12345

Phone with now hard reset to the original firmware and factory settings. Once finished it will restart and ask you to enter region, date, time, etc. as if you just took the phone out the box when you first purchased it.

Installing from Fresh

You now have a clean phone ready to load your data and install your applications back on, so this is the time you need to be careful what you do, where you install things and what you install. Personally I’ve got a list of the best application I like for Nokia phones and will only install these on a non-test phone, i.e. personal phone.

5. Reclaim back phone memory before installing by uninstalling any firmware pre-installed applications you don’t use. I removed Facebook, weather apps, most of the widgets. etc.. If you’re never going to use them, then get rid of them, you can always reinstall from OVI Store or the nokiAAddict downloads page later :)

6. Reinstall Phone contacts.

Within Contacts application:
a) Options \ Copy business card \ From other memory
b) Select ‘E: Mass memory’.

7. Install all new applications to the Mass Memory, there might be a few apps which can only be installed on phone (Python & Wordmobi), but most should work okay installed on the Mass Memory. What applications to install is up to yourself, but I’ve found the main memory hugger is email. For Email the best application I’ve found is LCG Profimail which installs and works great on Mass Memory, unlike Nokia Messaging which only installs to phone memory. Although Profimail isn’t FREE its well worth the money for heavy email users.

I’ve put together all the apps I have installed on the N97 HERE for you to enjoy :)

gerrymoth’s N97 Updated to Firmware v11.0.021

1 07 2009

scr000008.jpg I’ve just updated the Euro Generic N97 I have to Firmware v11.0.021 from the phone using the Phone Device Updater.

Will have a good play with it and let you know what I think soon.

Okay I’ve had a quick play around with the new firmware and here are my intial thoughts:

  • The keylock/screenlock at the side of the N97 now actually works 1st time, every time and with the N97 locked when you slide the keyboard out the screen now unlocks and illuminates :)
  • Album Art still using the wrong images selected in Music Player :(
  • Overall N97 stability feels better and the homescreen is behaving so far :)
  • Still getting “Download Failed” when trying to download and install anything in OVI Store application :(

I must say I do LOVE Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) updates, downloaded, installed, restared phone and that’s it. All done in about 5 minutes.
